What effect does the current economy Greek crises have on the tourism in Greece?
Would be interesting to know how the tourism in Greece will be effected by the current crisis-hit economy. I am travelling to Greece in July and how does this effect the traveler to Greece?

Aubrey,
I had 3 couples in my office last night deciding whether or not to take a Mediterranean cruise which was heavy on the Greek Islands. My view is the country of Greece will now, more that ever, need her tourism dollars. For the most part, you will most like be able to take advantage of better pricing on hotels (if you have not prepaid), restaurants and excursions.
The same was true for the US last year. We embraced their tourism...their money was a well needed boost to our economy.
The beaches will still be beautiful, and the Plaka bustling with tourists and shopkeepers all looking for the best deal.
By July, I would hope most of the economic situation will be on the right track and protests and shutdowns will be a mere memory.

I think the current economic conditions are less of a concern to travelers than the protests and strikes.
I have clients who are currently honeymooning in Greece. We did, at the very last minute, switch their Athens hotel from one close to Constitution Square to one closer to the Acropolis as a precaution but they were not going to cancel their dream honeymoon. We have been in contact with the travel supplier's ground staff in Athens to keep us abreast of any new developments with strikes and protests but after calls to the hotels in the islands, Santorini and Mykonos, my clients had no concern over going to Greece. They are actually pleased that their dollar will go further than it might have a few months ago.
I agree with Adrienne. Greece will need all the tourism that it can retain to help the economy maintain stability. I don't think the economy is going to effect your vacation experience.

Aubrey, you will most probably enjoy a better experience as the Euro has significantly weakened compared to the US$ and you will get better exchange rate. In Greece, you may see price dropping as many tourist areas are desperately looking for tourists and are offering great deals. Enjoy your trip! Greece is a wonderful country to visit, especially the Islands!

The bigger concern is how the riots, etc play out.
If the strikes by transportation and museum workers continue, who will want to go?

Aubrey, I agree with Greg here.
The images of the bank bombing and the riots are still too fresh in my mind to encourage anyone to go to Greece on holiday or work.
I suggest you avoid the region till stability returns.
Cheers
