Radio Frequency ID Systems with a flexible Application Programming Interface?
I'm looking for a supplier of passive RFID chips and associated reader hardware, along with a solid API for software integration. Can anyone make a recommendation from personal experience?

James,
You should clarify your question. Will it be a Proximity, HF or UHF application? Every project may have it's own needs and for each frequency we can advice you different suppliers. But if you are looking for a very generic one than I'll advice you Feig. They're a very big supplier all over the world and also producing readers for Texas Instruments. Their API is very concrete and also they're giving necessary educations for application programmers 3-4 times a year which seems fair enough. The education is given in their center weilburg ( nearby frankfurt ) and with plenty of weiss bier :)
Their api may seem weird or hard in the beginning but after understanding it you see that every api function you use also shows the progress physically.
But again feig is a generic example, if you have specific or very domain oriented questions please don't hesitate to do so. Just drop me a mail or a special note if you want to learn more.
Take care,
Kerem

Depending on your requirement and level of integration there are several answers.
For UHF (EPC) If you are looking for something packaged and want a big company behind it, I would look to Intermec. Somebody smaller and more nimble, ThingMagic.
If you want to integrate at HF I have had good luck with the Tagsys products. I have never actually used them, but understand that ThingMagic has a nice UHF oem reader.
Tags have more to do with the goods tagged then reader pairing.
I would be glad to respond more to further details.
Good Luck
Be happy to say more with more details.
