Would you find it useful to attend a public workshop on motivating employees?
This would be given in the Toronto area.

Hi - I think the idea of your workshop is great! I wish it were closer to me, but feel you should continue moving ahead with holding the seminar. The question of how to motivate people confronts me frequently.

I think this is a great idea.
Since the success of any facet of our businesses can almost always be traced back to motivated employees.
Although I am some distance from Toronto [WV], I am attending a workshop on motivating w/o money this Friday. It is hosted by our local SCORE.
So, my answer is yes, I do find it useful.

Hi Renee,
I wish I were closer. It is a great idea. We spent an entire class on this in my MBA and even then it leaves lots of room to advance the theories behind it. Motivation of employees is a broad subject and there are as many ways to motivate a person as there are people, so the more we learn about motivating people the wider our skills at working with different people/personalities.

No. I work for a 100% Employee Owned (truly) Architect-Engineer firm and that has been the best motivation for employees that you can probably have. I have been in many other places and the people watch their own hours and make sure the Client is always happy. (as much as realistically possible ;)

It seems to me that we use the term "motivation" to mean something that we do to people. In reality, however, people motivate themselves and there is not much we can do to "motivate" them. We can create the circumstances and the situation where someone could be motivated but can we really "make" them be motivated? I don't think so.
Would love to attend a seminar that gives us tools to put people in situations where they can motivate themselves!

This would depend on a number of factors. Every environment is different. That which motivates employees for one organization may have the opposite affect in another. And then, for instance, your marketing folks are built much different than your IT folks.
Also, even in the same basic role, that which will motivate the baby boomer generation is different than that of Gen-X is different than that of Gen-Y.
You have to understand your employees and your environment to truly motivate. Any such workshop must be able to address the following:
(1) How to understand your employees (including differences among the various rules)
(2) How to determine what would best motivate your employees.
Though examples can be given, again every situation is different. A workshop that just gives specific examples of motivation activities is not useful. But, one that enables a manager/executive to better read and understand their employees, and find what will motivate them, could definitely be useful.
